EXCELLENT LAPTOP August 23, 2010 GG This was the best purchase I ever made on Amazon. I had never seen this laptop in person, but was looking for an affordable option. I ordered it and received it 2 days later. The shipping was lightning fast and you cant beat the deal. It is nice and big. I work alot in excel and word and am loving the comfort of the bigger screen and the keyboard. The design of the laptop has a shiny surface, and that leaves you with a bunch of finger prints. Also, I wish they had designed the ports and power plug to come from the back instead of the sides of the computer. Other than that, it's perfect. Very fast. And since I bought the square trade warranty for three years, I don't have a care in the world. I paid $519 for the computer and $149 for the square trade warranty that covers EVERYTHING!When I was shopping around, I went in to Best Buy. I spoke with the geeks, at the geek squad. And they told me to buy this laptop immediately. They said the closest thing they had that was comperable in the store was almost $300 over the price I paid. And I had free shipping and no tax! BEST DEAL IN THE WORLD!!!!!!
An Almost Perfect Laptop August 16, 2010 rriley46 Although I am not very computer "literate", and I once bought a computer book for "dummies" which I didn't understand, the Toshiba Satellite L555D-S7005 is easy to use. I have encountered 2 problems, however. The first problem, which the computer may not be faulted for, is my inability to easily use it "wirelessly". I've been successful using it wirelessly only a couple of times, even after buying a new router. I've been able to use it wirelessly at other locations, but not at home. I'm now connected at home using an Ethernet cable, and have no more connection problems. The other problem is with the DVD burner. I was able to burn a few DVD's, but had to try several DVD's until I'd find one that the burner would accept. I tried 3 different brands of DVD's, ie, Sony, Memorex, and TDK, both DVD-R and DVD+R types, but it made no difference. For every 5 DVD's it rejected, I was able to burn 1 DVD. I'm not sure why it accepts one Sony DVD, and not the next 5 from the same stacked container. Other than the 2 above mentioned problems, I've found the computer to quickly connect to the internet, easily transfer files from and to flashdrives, etc., and quickly download files. I especially enjoy the built-in camera when using Skype.
A little disappointed..but good outweighs the bad by a little. August 13, 2010 J. Paz (LA, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, I bought this laptop with some spare cash I had received, hoping to have a better more faster laptop for my work and play on the internet, and for the price I paid ($590 including shipping) I can say that this was a bit of a let down. First things first: the speakers are TERRIBAD. Seriously, I think Toshiba made a deal with the 99 cents store, because these speakers have the same quality as a pair of headphones from there. The last Toshiba laptop I had had way better speakers; their only downfall was their low volume. Second: for the first couple of weeks, this thing ran hot....not to the point of boiling, but it got pretty warm in the most noticeable place: near the touchpad. This got a little uncomfortable at times and actually made me a little worried, but over time, the heat isn't very noticeable anymore. Third: I seem to be getting a BSOD every 2 1/2 weeks out of nowhere while watching YouTube videos, but this could just be a bad memory issue.
Ok that's enough of the bad side of this machine, now lets look at the positives: It's fast (Turion X2 dual-core + 4GB of DDR2 RAM = Pretty decent performance), the screen is very nice for watching videos and DVD'S, The keyboard is nicely laid out, it runs Windows 7 (a very big plus IMO), and it sports a good integrated graphics set for some good light gaming. Overall I'm happy with this laptop, but after a couple of weeks, I noticed I could have bought a better laptop from their website for only about $40 more (Phenom X2 quad-core and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. I totally missed out). Bottom line: shop at the manufacturers websites first before going on Amazon. You might find a better deal there (and a better setup).
Doesn't work well with iTunes 64bit! August 7, 2010 Jack I like everything about this laptop it's quick and easy to use the only thing i have problems with is using iTunes every time i sync my songs to my iPhone with iTunes (64bit version) it transfers my songs but when i play some songs there will be one that in the middle of a song it stops out-putting the sound but the music bar keeps moving and when i play the song from my iPhone in iTunes when it gets to the part where it stops out-putting music it skips to the next song (corrupted song) this also happened to my old 1st Gen iPod Touch. I updates the BIOS and bought a NEW usb cable and changed my iPhone and re-installed iTunes and updated it on top of that...iTunes and Toshiba don't play well together.
Decent for the Price, needs some small improvements August 5, 2010 David Miller 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I receieved this laptop a few weeks ago through [...]. They were very quick and accurate with the order. The Toshiba L555D-S7005 is a nice looking laptop with a nice large, colorful and clear screen. The numeric keypad is nice too. I was impressed that it is relatively lightweight considering it's size. It runs very quietly, even when it is working hard. I was shopping for a laptop that had quite a few features, but with a lower price, and this is what I found. [...] was running a good deal when I purchased this, and in combination with signing up for the Amazon visa card, I got this laptop for under $500, so it was a great deal. However, there were a few things I was disappointed in. Some other reviews had said the speakers weren't great, but I thought they were just being picky. I found out for myself that the built in speakers are pretty worthless; they have a distant, echoing sound. If you don't mind plugging in external speakers, this problem can be solved, but for me, I would like to have the option of good built in speakers when external ones aren't available. Also, the high gloss finish of the computer really does show fingerprints pretty badly. I am also disappointed with the wireless networking--it doesn't pick up wireless signals even as good as my 5 year old Compaq. I have placed this new laptop in the same location as my old one, and I can pick up a wireless internet signal with the old one, but not with this one. I may have to check into getting a wireless booster or something. Also, much of the software that comes with this computer is trial versions. One of the reasons I chose this laptop was I thought it came with decent software, including Microsoft Works. I did not realize until I got the laptop that Works was only a trial version, so I will have to spend more money to get that yet. I am not totally dissatisfied with it, but neither am I thrilled.
